Grainline Studio Duffle for Chris

I always end up making things for Chris that I wish I had made for myself. I've been wanting to make him a duffle for a while now and liked the Portside Grainline Studio pattern. The outer fabric is waxed canvas with a lighter weight lining all purchased from Drygoods Design.

The most regretting part of this project was buying an entire hide of leather to make the leather features. McPherson's was about to close in 10 minutes and they were breathing down my neck to figure out my purchase, in panic I grabbed the first hide that looked ok. Now I have a whole lot of leather to use for something, and I'm not too mad about that :).

All in all Chris loved the duffle and even used it on his last trip down to Salt Lake. He now has a handmade wallet, toiletry kit, and duffle made by me and they all have leather in them! Now I need to start treating myself to a few of these fancy projects.

This bag is lovely. I'm about to help my son make a backpack & in the process of collecting all the bits needed. Where did your leather come from & what would I expect to pay for a hide? I'm in the UK & haven't a clue where to get one from. Love yours though.

So glad you're inspired by the bag! I bought my leather from MacPherson's Leather (link below) and they do do online sales, shipping might be a little expensive. I believe the hide I purchased was about $130 which was on the lower price range compared to the hides available with fancy finishing. I'm not a real leather expert but I know this leather is about 2mm thick and what I really was looking for was something sturdy enough for handles but pliable enough to fold in half somewhat easily to do the strap handle. Good luck with your backpack!
